Spring Valley Mennonite Church, of rural Canton, was the first Mennonite church organized in Kansas in 1873 by Bishop Daniel Brundage. It began as a small flock of immigrants settling on the prairie and built its meeting place in 1875 on the southeast corner of Bishop Brundage's homestead at a cost of $400. An updated meeting place still holds a small flock committed to Jesus Christ and His Word.
Historically, that committment led to the "tar and feathering" of former pastors, Daniel A Diener then his son Charles Diener, duing the war years and is still remembered and encourages our congregation to "hold fast" and persevere. As a light to the world, the church continutes to support missionaries, missions locally and globally, relief efforts and establishment of two local churches. Our church is a theologically conservative congregation that believes in the inerrancy of Holy Scripture, believing that God is a loving and forgiving God whose love was demonstrated through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We emphasize a personal relationship with Jesus Christ that leads to beliefs and behaviors that give meaning and direction to life. Open doors and outreach welcome people to come, worship, study and fellowship with the body of Christ. Our fellowship is often an outreach to the communities around us. Our cemetery holds the stories of the past that are retold again and again. The Pastor and Elders give spiritual direction to the congregation. Our mission is "Connecting people with God by bringing people to Jesus, by blending people together, by building people up for service and discipleship." Average attendance is about 40. We gather on Sundays for worship at 10:30 a.m. with Sunday School before at 9:30 a.m. We were blessed by God in 2023 to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Spring Valley Mennonite Church. A book entitled First on the Prairie; The Story of Spring Valley Mennonite Church written by John Sharp in 2019 contains an indepth look at the congregation's history.
